John and Aimee (the cute ones on the left) first met in college. They became friends. They almost kissed. They still debate about whether they went on a date.

After college, they remained friends.

Though life took them in different directions, they saw one another seven times during those next 20 years—Aimee’s wedding, John’s wife’s funeral, two minor league ballgames with the Cub Scouts, a flight to Vegas, and twice John and his children joined Aimee’s family for cookouts.

A Facebook birthday greeting reconnected them in the midst of Aimee’s divorce. John provided her with single-parenting tips. Their friendship deepened…
